STYLES

At Draco Academy's two Chicago-area (Homewood, IL and Dyer, IN) martial arts studios (dojos), we embrace the philosophy and techniques of two important Martial Arts styles. Both of these styles bring many benefits -- physical, emotional, and spiritual -- to our students and instructors.

TAEKWONDO

Taekwondo is a Korean art of self-defense. Literally translated, it means "the way of the foot and fist." Students of this Martial Art learn an array of blocks, kicks, punches, forms and self-defense techniques.

The Tenets of Taekwondo:
  • Courtesy - Behavior that demonstrates consideration, cooperation, and generosity.
  • Perseverance - Determination, steadfastness, persistence in spite of difficulties.
  • Self-Control - Exercising restraint over one's impulses, self-discipline.
  • Indomitable Spirit - Unconquerable courage, a "yes, I can" attitude.
  • Integrity - Honesty, trustworthiness, and incorruptibility.

HAPKIDO

Contact Draco

Hapkido is also a Korean art of self-defense. Literally translated, it means "the way of coordinated power." Hapkido students learn to defend themselves from an attacker by using circular blocking and deflection techniques, joint locks, take-downs, throws, kicks, and punches. Students also learn defenses against knife attacks. Hapkido does not depend on strength, rather it uses fluid motion to re-direct the attacker's energy to one's advantage.
